Frequently Asked Questions
When should I arrive for my lesson?
Please arrive at least 15 minutes early to:
Get suited up
Meet your instructor
Be present for the mandatory safety briefing
Important: If you miss the safety briefing, you can’t join the session and won’t be eligible for a refund or reschedule.
This policy is in place for your safety and the smooth running of the group.
Do I need to be a good swimmer?
You don’t need to be a competitive swimmer — but for your safety and enjoyment, you must be able to swim at least 50 metres unassisted in open water, without touching the bottom or holding onto anything.
If you’re not confident with that yet, we recommend building up your swimming first before booking.
This helps us keep the focus on surfing (not survival!) and ensures the whole group feels safe and supported in the water.
What should I bring to the lesson?
Please bring:
Swimsuit (to wear under your wetsuit)
Towel
Sunscreen
A bottle of water
Warm clothes for after your session
Do you provide wetsuits and boards?
Yes — all lessons include premium soft-top surfboards and high-quality wetsuits for the duration of your program, so you can just show up and surf.
That said, if you’re planning to keep surfing, it’s worth investing in your own wetsuit. It’s the most important piece of personal gear — and makes a big difference in both comfort and performance.
If you’re joining a weeklong program, one of the included theory sessions is a guided gear-buying workshop, where we walk you through what to look for and visit some of our favourite local surf stores.
If you're on a weekend or private course, we’re still happy to point you in the direction of trusted local shops — many of which offer solid discounts.
Can I use my own board during lessons?
For safety and consistency, all beginner group lessons require the use of our provided soft-top boards. They’re safer, more forgiving, and help create a smoother group experience for everyone.
If you'd like to train on your own board, we recommend either booking a private session or joining one of our intermediate programs, where we can tailor the coaching to your specific board, style, and goals.
If you're a beginner and don’t yet own a board — hold off!
We’re happy to recommend you a surfboard and trusted local surf shops and offer buying advice — just ask.
How many people are in a group lesson?
Group lessons are capped at a maximum of 5 students. That means more individual coaching, more wave time, and no being left behind after a quick demo.
We keep it small so you actually learn — not just get pushed into a few waves.
What beaches do you use for lessons?
We work around the conditions to keep things safe and fun. Lessons are held at beginner-friendly beaches around Torquay and Anglesea, chosen daily based on wind, swell, and tide.
You’ll receive a message the day before your lesson confirming the best location for your session — so you’ll always know where to go and what to expect.
What happens if the weather is bad?
We always prioritise safety. If the conditions are too dangerous or unsuitable for learning — like high winds, storms, or big swell — we’ll reschedule your lesson or offer a credit/refund. Your choice.
If it’s just a bit of wind or rain, we usually go ahead. Some of the best sessions happen in unexpected weather — fewer crowds, more adventure, and often great waves.
Do lessons run in winter?
Yes — we run lessons year-round, weather and conditions permitting.
With the right wetsuit, winter surfing can be incredible: smaller crowds, cleaner conditions, and a peaceful vibe you just don’t get in summer.
In fact, winter often brings the best waves for intermediate and advanced surfers, making it the ideal time to level up your skills.
Don’t worry — we provide premium wetsuits to keep you warm and comfortable out there.
What if I want to take the same program again?
Go for it — surfing isn’t a one-and-done skill.
Many students choose to repeat a program to build consistency, confidence, and muscle memory before stepping up.
Repeating a course:
Refines your fundamentals
Helps you stay more relaxed in the water
Gives you more reps in a familiar, supportive setting
You’ll be surprised how much progress you make the second time — same structure, stronger surfer.
It’s been a while since I last surfed — where should I start?
If it’s been 6 months or more, we usually recommend repeating your last program — especially if you were still getting comfortable with paddling, popping up, or wave reading.
Surfing’s a feel-based skill, and it’s totally normal to feel rusty after time away. Repeating a familiar program helps rebuild confidence and reset your technique — without the pressure of learning something new straight away.
Think of it as a refresher before you level up.
Are lessons suitable for kids?
Not at this stage — Dawn is focused on coaching adult surfers, whether you're a total beginner or getting back into it after a break.
We don’t currently offer kids' lessons or family programs, but we’re happy to recommend trusted local surf schools that do.
What is your cancellation policy?
Because we run small-group, high-value programs with limited capacity, we have a strict cancellation policy.
